Key Trends 2018
The good thing about make up trends in 2018 is that anything goes. Its possible to be as individual or as understated as you like. Key looks this summer are block colour eyes – think bright vivid hues in electric blues and oranges. Pinks & Reds also feature heavily both on the lid and with a sweep under the eye. Think 90s clubbing and its an anything goes feel.
Want to replicate this look without spending a fortune on products – then consider using the new seasons gel glitter liner – all the high street beauty brands have them – I love the Rimmel Wonder Swipe 2-in-1 Liner to Shadow – a bold metallic liner that can be transformed into a sparkly shadow with one swipe. Most of these new formulations are smudge proof and transfer proof and can give up to 10 hours of wear. Try shade 001 Slay for a shot of colour to the side of the eyes – it doesn’t have to be thick or intimidating – a tiny 5 to 8 mm line in the corner of the outside eye can give a subtle pop of colour that says wow.
I personally rate Collection makeup and I am head over heels in love with Glam Crystals Dazzling Gel Liner in Le Freak 5 its a Turquoise glitter gel and whilst at 46 I could do without the glitter it actually looks great if used sparingly. Only a few pounds (£3.99 Superdrug) and once on you can be assured there will be no smudging or running hurrah!
The colour blocking trend is colour almost stamped onto eyelids and it is a serious look – however this can be replicated for the less bold with a sweep of colour – try a cat flick in yellow or red for something completely different.
Sheeny skin is big and whilst our summer gets hotter and hotter foundation will get lighter and perhaps a sweep of illuminator across the cheek bones is a good way to stay chic and groomed whilst its sweltering outside and make up needs to be light and translucent. A personal favourite of mine is Laura Mercier mineral Illuminating Powder £27.00 from Space NK it gives a sheer pearl glow when applied with a brush to highlight cheekbones and adds a lift to skin.
If £27 is a little out of budget for a simple powder (well the queen of powders in my estimation!) then maybe try another from budget brand Collection – Gorgeous Glow Bronzing Block gives a shimmer of colour that adds a lovely subtle bronze glow and its £3.99 at Boots.
Beautician Tricks and tips
The number one thing that will make any makeup application look great is even greater skin. Remember to stay as hydrated as possible – water water water and drink as much as possible to keep skin dewy and hydrated. Oxygen is one of the greatest assets to beautiful skin – running or any aerobic activity will give you a glow that lasts all day.
Great groomed brows lift the face and provide a wonderful frame. As a beautician I am constantly amazed at how waxing even the soft downy here around the brow area can lift and brighten the face. Tint adds a final pop of colour that adds strength and continuity to a great brow. Another simple adjustment that gives great results is lash tinting. A really effective treatment that most of my clients book monthly with their eyebrow tint & wax.
Of course regular facials with lots of facial massage give great lifting and rejuvenation of the skin as well. This is also good for the connective tissue and keeps skin supple and lifted.
For special occasions I love lash extensions – either a full set of individual lashes or the cluster lashes added to the corners add a touch of glamour and give the eyes a real lift.
My personal favourite Budget Buys & Key Splurge Items
There are a few products that I could not live without.
1. Rimmel Lasting Finish Breathable Foundation
This is a silky lightweight foundation that gives a natural dewy coverage with the lasting finish that moisturises for us to 25 hours. It also contains an SPF20. £8.99 Superdrug
2. Laura Mercier Noir Supreme
It applies with ease due to its shape and gives the finish of a gel and the precision of a liquid liner yet this is a kohl pencil – i just love this products design and look and it gives excellent coverage that stays put all day for a wonderful smoky eye. £22 John Lewis.
3. Guerlain Meteorites
One of those beauty products that makes you feel like a million dollars. These multi coloured pearls with their violet fragrance add a touch of colour to my make up application – the packaging is just beautiful and I feel every woman should have these on her dressing table – a bit of old school glamour. £41 John Lewis – PS they last ages and are worth the money honestly – they would also make a perfect gift.
Beauty Tools – The Beauty Blender
Worth mentioning a beauty tool that you may like to try. The beauty blender is a sponge designed by a make up artist to give a flawless foundation application. Simply wet the beauty blender first and using the fat side tap your foundation. Apply concealer under the eyes with your fingers and using a micro beauty blender squeeze pointy side and once again tap tap tap into the creases of the eye. You can also blend contour with the beauty blender – wiping contour outwards and upwards towards hairline. You can then use the beauty blender to dot on a liquid highlighter. The genius of the beauty blender is that you can also set your make up using a powder with the same blender. Clean your beauty blender after each use – with soap.
These can be purchased in most stores that sell makeup brushes tools etc. for around £10
Most of all enjoy your make up – its fun and makes us feel good! Steph xx
